Meaning
Devotion to the Formless entails significant hardship, as the journey toward the Formless Absolute is challenging for those bound within a physical body. (12:5)
Commentary
It may not be appropriate to regard this verse as negating the Path of Meditation or Knowledge. To say that science and mathematics are complex subjects compared to arts that are simpler and more enjoyable should not be taken as advice to abstain from studying mathematics and science altogether. Whoever can and likes to walk these arduous paths may go for them! The Path of Loving Devotion is the royal road! Everyone can walk this path easily—that is the intent of the Lord!
Bhagawān Rāma also says in the Rām-charit-mānas—"The Path of Knowledge is difficult to tread, and there are many hurdles. Very few can succeed on this path. The means are complex, and it is difficult to focus the mind on the Formless. Even if one finds the Formless with great pains, he will not be dear to Me unless he possesses a feeling of loving devotion too.
