Chapter 17: The Yoga of the Division of Three Types of Faith
Verse 17:10

Meaning

Supreme God Krishna spoke

Food that is undercooked, lacking in juices, possesses a foul odor, is stale, or has been consumed and left over by others, as well as impure or unholy food, is relished by those with a Tāmasic nature. (17:10)

Commentary

A note on meat-eating: Meat from animals or fish is inherently associated with impurity and a sense of being unholy, as it originates from a deceased body. Corpses, including animal remains, undergo rapid decay and putrefaction compared to vegetables, emitting strong odors. Hence meat is best avoided as food. The practice of eating meat and fish also does not align with the teachings in the Bhagavad-Gitā, which emphasizes compassion toward animals.

The Bhāgawata Purāna, a related scripture, states that those who kill animals for consumption are individuals lacking knowledge Verse 8, Chapter 5, Eleventh Skandha, Bhāgawata Purāna). Consequently, meat from animals is considered inedible and possesses Tāmasic qualities in many respects. With proper culinary techniques and recipes, vegetarian food can be equally or even more delightful in taste.

Controversies regarding the nutritional value of vegetarian diets have been largely resolved among scientists, with a growing consensus that non-vegetarian diets can reduce longevity and contribute to various diseases. many scientific research institutions have published research supporting this viewpoint. The Seventh-Day Adventists, a Christian sect abstaining from meat and fish, was once reported as the longest-living members within the Christian community.

Similar to the adverse health effects of non-vegetarian diets, substances like cigarettes and tobacco have been shown to reduce lifespan by causing numerous diseases, including cancer. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption is generally detrimental to health and can lead to domestic violence and disrupt peace. God, in many verses of the Bhagavad-Gitā, promotes the values of peace and non-violence.

Considering these factors, transitioning to a Sāttvic diet plan is advisable for those seeking a balanced, harmonious, and spiritual lifestyle.
