Meaning
Mind-control, mastery over the senses, austerity, cleanliness, forgiveness, simplicity, faith in God, scriptural knowledge and spiritual wisdom, are all innate qualities and characteristics of Brāhmins. (18:42)
Commentary
Although the varna system in the Bhagavad-Gitā isn't tied to lineage, each varna is meticulously defined by its inherent characteristics. This clarifies that identifying as a Brāhmin is not solely based on birth, even though those born into a Brāhmin family are more likely to be familiar with scriptures and the rigorous, pure traditions expected of a Brāhmin. Regardless of birth status, whether born into a Brāhmin family or not, one must embody the qualities prescribed by God, the system's creator (4:13). To sum up, merely being born into a Brāhmin family does not automatically grant Brāhmin status.
However, in Indian tradition, most individuals assert Brāhmin identity and assert superiority solely based on their birth into Brāhmin families, even if they engage in occupations outside traditional Brāhmin roles such as running businesses, farming, or serving in the military. This tradition lacks support in the Bhagavad-Gitā.
