Chapter 8: The Yoga of the Imperishable Brahman
Verse 8:25

Meaning

Supreme God Krishna spoke

The Yogi who leaves his body during conditions marked by smoke, nighttime, the dark half of the lunar month, and the six months when the sun takes its southern path, attains the lunar light and returns to be reborn. (8:25)

Commentary

The sun’s southern course, or Dakshināyana, begins on the 14th of July and continues until the 14th of January in the Indian calendar. This period corresponds to the winter months in India and is considered the opposite of Uttarāyana, during which the sun’s path is inclined toward the north.
